Basel H3049-31501r.jpg

This specimen was lot 31501 in Heritage sale 3049 (Long Beach, September 2016), where it sold for $822.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "Basel. City 60 Kreuzer 1584 AU58 NGC. Exceptional for the type, with fully defined illustrations and a pleasing pattern of tone that shows russet color within the recesses of the argent motifs. From the Redwood Collection, Part II." We dearly wish the auction cataloguer had reported the weight of this coin so that we could ascertain that this is a gulden (2/3 thaler) or a smaller denomination. In the late eighteenth century, 160 kreuzer = one thaler, making this a 3/8 thaler, but this is probably closer to 5/6 thaler.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver.

Catalog reference: Dav-158, HMZ-260u.
