Sincona sale 51, lot 4020
This specimen was lot 4020 in Sincona sale 51 (Zurich, October 2018), where it sold for 1,400 CHF (about US$1,689 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"Reichsmünzstätte Basel, Halbdukat o. J. (um 1770). Stempel von Johann Ulrich Samson. Basilisk mit ovalem Stadtwappen, darunter Signatur S. Rv. Wertangabe mit Schrift im Fünfpass. Sehr selten. Gutes sehr schön. Schrötlingsfehler und Henkelspur. (imperial city of Basel, undated half ducat, dies by John Ulrich Samson. Obverse: basilisk with oval city arms, "S" below; reverse: value in five line inscription. Very rare, Good very fine, Flan defect and minor mount mark.)"
The canton struck undated half ducats of several varieties in the third quarter of the eighteenth century. They are rare, like all the gold coinage of this canton. The SCWC attributes this coin to 1780; we will stick with the local auctioneer's opinion.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 1.75 g, .986 fine gold, this specimen 1.68 g.
