The first specimen was lot 4654 in Goldberg sale 80 (Los Angeles, June 2014), where it sold for $4,230. The catalog description[1] noted, "Switzerland - Basel. 2 Talers, ND. City arms surrounded by eight shields. Reverse: Double eagle in border. Natural flan crack at top and flat area by edge. Original toning. NGC graded AU-55." This specimen was lot 4133 in Sincona sale 43 (Zurich, October 2017), where it sold for 5,500 CHF (about US$6,563 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[2] noted,
"Stadt und Kanton Basel, Doppeltaler o. J. (um 1640). Im Zentrum Baselstab in rundem Schild, umgeben von acht Vogteiwappen in geschweiften Schildchen, in der Mitte oben beginnend: Farnsburg, Homberg, Münchenstein, Pratteln, Riehen, Ramstein, Liestal und Waldenburg, zwischen den Wappen je eine Lilienverzierung. Rv. Nimbierter Doppeladler. Selten. Fast FDC. Prachtvolle Erhaltung. (city and canton of Basel, undated double thaler from about 1640. Obverse: city arms on round shield in center, eight local shields around; reverse: nimbate double headed eagle. Rare, About uncirculated, Magnificent condition.)"
This rare type was struck sometime in the early eighteenth century.
