Austria SB517-72026r.jpg

This specimen was lot 72026 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice Online Auction (Santa Ana, CA, May 2017), where it sold for $75. The catalog description[1] noted, "AUSTRIA. 25 Schilling, 1964. NGC PROOF-66. Grillparzer error (Nine shields on reverse). Toned." This type comes with two distinctly different reverses; KM 2985.2 (shown here) has nine shields on the reverse while KM 2985.1 has ten. The nine shield reverse was used on other Austrian commemoratives 1956-63 and the ten shield reverse appeared on commemoratives of 1964-73. This error may merely be a mule.

Recorded mintage: 3,660 plus 1,665,000 (KM 2985.1) plus 35,000 proofs (KM 2985.1).

Specification: 13 g, .800 fine silver, 30 mm diameter, lettered edge.

Catalog reference: KM-2895.2.
