This specimen was lot 31661 in Heritage sale 3049 (Long Beach, September 2016), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "Joseph II gold 2 Ducat 1780 E-HS MS61 NGC, Karlsburg mint. A lightly handled piece as indicated by the grade, but lustrous overall with sharp details and very subtle tone." Like most double ducats, this type, listed for 1777-80, is scarce. Altho Friedberg lists this under Hungary, we have followed the SCWC and filed it under Austria. The Karlsburg mint is the only mint which struck double ducats using this uniformed bust of Joseph II. Single ducats (Fr-193) are known from multiple mints.

Recorded mintage: unknown but scarce.

Specification: 7 g, .986 fine gold, .221 troy oz AGW.

Catalog reference: Huszar-1832, Fr-191 (Hungary), KM 1869 (Austria).
