Austria 1696-Hall thaler Dav 3245A
This specimen was lot 31591 in Heritage sale 3040 (Chicago, April 2015), where it sold for $998.75. The catalog description noted, "Leopold I Taler 1696 MS63 NGC. Hall mint. Exquisite slate gray toning with every curl in the ornate wig clearly defined." This type was struck at the Hall mint 1694-1700 and at Graz in 1698. It is fairly common but not in this condition. It seems unlikely that the emperor was ever called "the Hogmouth" to his face.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
