Sedwick sale 12, lot 1268

This specimen was lot 327 in Sedwick sale 12 (Winter Park, FL, October 2012), where it sold for $354. The catalog description[1] noted, "Habsburg Austria (Hall mint), thaler, Archduke Leopold, 1620, encapsulated NGC AU 53. Davenport #3328. Lustrous fields, light (slightly uneven toning), impressive details." Sorting out the Austrian thalers of the seventeenth century is complicated; the SCWC lists eleven types for 1620 alone. This issue, from the Hall mint, is fairly common. This type was struck 1620-25 in numerous varieties (Dav-3328, -3329, -3329V, -3330, -3330V). In addition, other Austrian thalers for 1620 include Dav-3049, -3114, -3329, -3329V, -3074, -3076 and -3099. Quite a challenge for those used to collecting neat rows of Lincoln cents.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver.

Catalog reference: Dav-3328, KM 264.1.
