Australia 1939 half penny KM-41
This specimen was lot 4642 in Goldberg sale 65 (Los Angeles, September 2011), where it sold for $92. The catalog description noted, "Australia. ½ Penny, 1939. Kangaroo reverse. NGC graded AU-58 Brown." Two types of half pennies are recorded from Melbourne for 1939; the leaping kangaroo reverse shown here is much the scarcer.
Sterling coinage was struck for several countries besides Great Britain, including Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Southern Rhodesia, Fiji and New Guinea. All converted to decimal coinage in the 1960's.
Recorded mintage: 504,000.
