Goldberg sale 85, lot 3520
Australia G85-3520r.jpg

This specimen was lot 3520 in Goldberg sale 85 (Los Angeles, June 2015), where it sold for $235. The catalog description[1] noted, "Australia. J. MacGregor. Penny, ND (1865). Sydney, New South Wales. Arms with supporters. By the date an old mark possibly a scratch or flaw made at the time of striking. Nice original mint luster. NGC graded Uncirculated, Details (Obverse Damage)." In the late nineteenth century, as Australia was settled by emancipated convicts and free immigrants, normal commerce sprang up yet the Sydney mint was occupied solely with minting gold from the mines. Various merchants issued private tokens, including this one from J. McGregor. It is accompanied by a half penny token and is fairly available.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: Bronze. 31 mm.

Catalog reference: KM-Tn153.
