Sincona sale 50, lot 1028
This specimen was lot 1028 in Sincona sale 50 (Zurich, October 2018), where it sold for 10,000 CHF (about US$12,062 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"Augsburg, Stadt. Doppeltaler 1627. Mit Titel Ferdinands II. Stadtansicht in einer oben offenen Kartusche, darüber der von zwei Engeln mit Kranz und Palmzweig gehaltene Stadtpyr. Rv. Gekrönter, linksblickender Reichsadler mit Zepter und Schwert in den Fängen, der Reichsapfel im Stoss, das Ganze in einem verzierten Kreis. Von grösster Seltenheit. Reste einer Henkelspur auf dem Rand. Sonst vorzügliches Exemplar mit feiner Patina. (Germany, City of Augsburg, double thaler of 1627, struck in the name of Ferdinand II. Obverse: City view in an open-topped cartouche, above which is the city pyramid held by two angels with wreath and palm branch; reverse: Crowned imperial eagle with scepter and sword, orb on the breast, circle around. Of the highest rarity, Traces of mounting on the edge, Otherwise extremely fine specimen with nice toning.)"
This type was struck 1627 only and is rare. It was accompanied by a single thaler and various fractions.
