This type was struck 1953-61 for the Portuguese colony of Angola on the west coast of Africa south of the Congo. It superseded a nickel-bronze type struck 1948-50 and was the last of the denomination. After a protracted struggle, Angola obtained its independence in 1975 and then dissolved into civil war as various factions contended for control.

Recorded mintage: 8,873,000.

Specification: bronze, 20 mm diameter, plain edge.
