This type was struck 1922-23 for the Portuguese colony of Angola on the west coast of Africa south of the Congo. It was accompanied by a copper-nickel ten centavos (KM 63) and twenty centavos (KM 64). After a protracted struggle, Angola obtained its independence in 1975 and then dissolved into civil war as various factions contended for control.

Recorded mintage: 6,000,000.

Specification: 10.5 g, nickel, 31 mm diameter.
