Sincona sale 23, lot 2988
Ensisheim in upper Alsace. The political situation is of 1477, on the collapse of the Burgundians. Upper Alsace would be ruled by the Hapsburgs until 1648 when it passed to France.
This specimen was lot 2988 in Sincona sale 23 (Zurich, May 2015), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted,
"RDR/ÖSTERREICH, Erzherzog Leopold V. 1619-1632 Taler 1626. Ensisheim. R Gutes vorzüglich. Bei dem Typ handelt es sich um die erste Talerprägung mit Leopold V. als weltlicher Fürst. Im Stempelkorpuss von Klemesch über die Münzstätte Ensisheim wird der Taler als Stück vom 1. Stempel der Avers- und Reverswalze 1 beschrieben. (Holy Roman Empire, archduke Leopold V (1619-32), thaler of 1626, Ensisheim mint, rare, good extremely fine.)"
This type is listed for 1626 only but is common. Ensisheim would fall to the French at the end of the Thirty Years War.
