Sincona sale 35, lot 5003
The first specimen was lot 1705 in Ponterio sale 173 (New York, January 2013), where it sold for $411. The catalog description[1] noted, "SWITZERLAND. Aargau. 10 Batzen, 1809. PCGS AU-58 Secure Holder. Double laurel branch variet[y]. Holder erroneously states palms version. Toned with attractive lustrou[s] peripheral highlights." The second specimen was lot 3618 in Sincona sale 20 (Zurich, October 2014), where it sold for CHF 1,000 (about US$1,253 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[2] noted, "10 Batzen 1809. Palm- und Lorbeerzweig. FDC. (palm and laurel wreath, uncirculated.)" The canton of Aargau issued a variety of coins during 1808-31, ranging from billon one rappen to a silver four franken of 1812. Forty batzen = four franken = one thaler and ten rappen = one batzen. The other ten batzen for 1809 (KM 14, see second specimen) shows a laurel and palm branch on the obverse instead of the two laurel branches shown here. The third specimen was lot 5003 in Sincona sale 35 (Zurich, October 2016), where it sold for 1,300 CHF (about US$1,543 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[3] noted,
