Sedwick sale 12, lot 1664

The specimen shown was lot 1664 in Sedwick sale 12 (Winter Park, FL, October 2012), where it sold for $383.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "Seville, Spain, milled 4 reales "double pistareen," Philip V, 1737PJ. 12.9 grams. Choice VF+ with contrasting toning, no problems." This type was issued at Seville 1728-40. While four reales of this period are half the price of the rare eight reales, they are still seven times the price of a bust four reales of the 1770's.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 13.54 g, .931 fine silver, .405 troy oz ASW.

Catalog reference: Cayón-9107, KM-356; CT-1157.
