Jean Elsen sale 137, lot 849
This specimen was lot 849 in Jean Elsen sale 137 (Brussels, June 2018), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted,
"ESPAGNE, CASTILLE ET LEON, Henri IV (1454-1474), AV enrique de la silla, Séville. 2e groupe. D/ ENRICVS C-ARTVS REX C Le roi trônant de f. dans un double quadrilobe, ten. une épée sur l'épaule. A ses pieds, lion rampant à d. R/ + ENRICVS REX CASTELLE ET LEGIONI Armes écartelées de Castille et Leon. En desssous, S. Rare Fines stries de polissage des coins. Très Beau à Superbe. (kingdom of Spain, Castile and Leon, Henry IV, 1454-74, gold henry of the chair, Seville, second group. Obverse: the king enthroned, facing, in a double quadrilobe, holding a sword on his shoulder, a lion rampant at his feet; reverse: quartered arms of Castile and Leon, S below. Rare, fine polishing marks from the dies, very fine to extremely fine.)"
The enrique de la silla, issued during the short unhappy reign of Henry IV, was worth 350 maravedis when first issued. It was issued in Burgos, Madrid, Murcia, Cuenca, Jaen, Segovia, Seville and Toledo. Numerous varieties exist, with the king seated on a plain or Gothic throne surrounded by a circle or a quadrilobe.
