Sincona sale 43, lot 3756
The first specimen was lot 30730 in Heritage sale 3037 (New York, January 2015), where it sold for $7,637.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "Enrique IV gold Castellano (Enrique d'oro) ND (1454-74)-S MS62 NGC, Seville mint. A handsome example, as well as a conditional rarity, this early gold type presents pleasing design motifs atop antiqued-golden surfaces. The rampant lion displays some ghosting but the reverse imagery of the three-towered castle is superb. A choice specimen worthy of much attention." The second specimen was lot 3756 in Sincona sale 43 (Zurich, October 2017), where it sold for 2,600 CHF (about US$3,103 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[2] noted,
"SPAIN, Königreich, Enrique IV. 1454-1474 Castellano o. J. Sevilla. Selten. Vorzüglich. (kingdom of Spain, Henry IV, 1454-74, undated castellano, Seville mint. Rare, Extremely fine.)"
The gold coinage of Spain prior to the rule of the Catholic Kings is rare. A half castellano also exists. Friedberg notes this type for Cordoba, Cuenca, Segovia, Seville and Toledo. Cayón notes that it had a face value of 485 maravedis.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 4.6 g, gold; the second specimen 4.57 g.

Catalog reference: Fr-113, Cayón no. 1577.
