This specimen was lot 25009 in Heritage sale 3016 (Orlando, FL, January 2012), where it sold for $5,750. The catalog description[1] noted, "J. Brooke Cent 1863, Proof 67 BN NGC, superb metallic blue patina with highly reflective surfaces, a gorgeous coin in all respects and rare in Proof." Sarawak, now a part of Malaysia, was once ruled by a dynasty of white rajahs ending with Charles V. Brooke (ruled 1917-46). James Brooke (r. 1841-68) founded the line but his coinage comprises only half cents and cents of 1863. The region was devastated by Japanese occupation during World War Two, so the rajah abdicated in favor of direct British rule.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: copper, plain edge.

Catalog reference: KM 3.
