Heritage sale 3024, lot 25368
Russia 1851 5 rubles rev Heritage 3024-25368.jpg

This specimen was lot 25368 in Heritage sale 3024 (Chicago, April 2013), where it sold for $2,585. The catalog description[1] noted, "Nicholas I gold 5 Roubles 1851 CПБ-AГ, Crowned double-headed Imperial eagle / Date and value in circle, MS62 NGC. Lightly abraded surfaces, with full, brilliant luster, and superb definition. A nice Mint State example." This type was struck at the St. Petersburg mint 1846-54. Large numbers were made but few survive. In 1886, the standard was revised to match the French twenty francs d'or, resulting in a weight reduction to .186 troy oz.

Recorded mintage: 3,400,000 plus a few proofs.

Specification: 6.54 g, .917 fine gold, .193 troy oz AGW.

Catalog reference: Bitkin-34; Fr-155; KM-C175.3.
