Russia 1777 1/2 ruble Fr-136

This specimen was lot 40343 in Ponterio sale 168 (Philadelphia, August 2012), where it sold for $1,840. The catalog description[1] noted, "RUSSIA. 1/2 Ruble, 1777. NGC AU-58. Catherine II (the Great) (1762-96). Demarete Collection." This gold half ruble, or poltina, is listed for 1777-78 only and is the last gold issue of that denomination, which was regularly struck in silver.
