Heritage sale 3021, lot 22509
This specimen was lot 5001 in Künker sale 294 (Osnabruck, Germany, July 2017), where it sold for €2,200 (about US$2,965 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "RUSSLAND, KAISERREICH, Alexei Michailowitsch, 1645-1676. Jefimok 1655, überprägt auf einem Reichstaler 1608 von Sachsen, Christian II. Johann Georg I. und August, 1591-1611, Münzstätte Dresden. 29,10 g. Mit zwei Gegenstempeln auf der Vorderseite: 1) St. Georg im Kampf mit dem Drachen, 2) Jahreszahl 1655. Dav. - (zu 7566); Schnee - (zu 767). R Feine Tönung, sehr schön. Exemplar der Slg. Bernhard Terletzki. Erworben im April 1970 vom Bankhaus J. M. Bickelmann & Co. Saarbrücken. (empire of Russia, Alexis, 1645-76, jefimok of 1655, counterstamped on a Saxon thaler of 1608. With two obverse stamps, St. George and the dragon and a separate stamp for the date. Scarce, fine toning, very fine.) (The word "jefimok" (plural: "jefimki") is derived from the Polish "joachimik" and became the Russian word for thaler, which itself originated from the "joachimsthalers" struck by the counts of Schlick in Bohemia. To numismatists, "jefimok" specifically means the German and Dutch thalers counterstamped by the Russian emperor in 1655 for circulation in the Ukraine. These were demonetized in 1659 and the majority melted.)"
