The specimen shown is from a type struck for Portugal 1932-51. The handsome caravel design was also used on two-and-a-half and ten escudos coins. When the issue of five escudos resumed in 1963, it was a copper-nickel coin.

Recorded mintage: 966,000, a common date.

Specification: 7 g, .650 fine silver, .146 troy oz ASW, reeded edge, 25 mm diameter.
