from Sedwick Treasure Auction 21, lot 1716

In 1910, Portugal, having ousted her king, dropped the réis and adopted the escudo, divided into 100 centavos. The specimen shown is a better date, despite the large mintage, of a type struck for Portugal 1927-68. It superseded an aluminum-bronze type struck 1924-26 (KM 576) and in turn was replaced by a bronze coin struck 1969-79. The escudo was retired in 1999 when Portugal joined the euro. This specimen was lot 1716 in Sedwick Treasure Auction 21 (Winter Park, FL, May 2017), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "Portugal, copper-nickel 1 escudo, 1930, encapsulated NGC MS 64. KM-578. Nice golden toning over muted-luster surfaces, no wear and only the slightest of marks, tied with one other for second highest grade in NGC census (behind a pair of MS 65's). NGC #2046728-006."

Recorded mintage: 1,911,000, a semi-key date.

Specification: 7.5 g, copper-nickel, 26.7 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: KM-578, Gomes-25.04.
