Heritage sale 3064, lot 31529
Portugal H3064-31529r.jpg

In 1910, Portugal, having ousted her king, dropped the réis and adopted the escudo, divided into 100 centavos. The specimen shown is a better date, despite the large mintage, of a type struck for Portugal 1927-68. It superseded an aluminum-bronze type struck 1924-26 (KM 576) and in turn was replaced by a bronze coin struck 1969-79. The escudo was retired in 1999 when Portugal joined the euro. This specimen was lot 31529 in Heritage sale 3064 (Chicago, April 2018), where it sold for $660. The catalog description[1] noted, "Republic Escudo 1929 MS67 PCGS. An exquisite gem, featuring pleasing steel-gray surfaces and a light russet tone near the peripheries. Truly wondrous to view and scarce to be encountered so attractive."

Recorded mintage: 1,617,000, a better date.

Specification: 7.5 g, copper-nickel, 26.7 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: KM-578, Gomes-25.03.
