This is one of the less common issues of the nineties. It commemorates the visit of Pope John Paul II to the Philippines, the only Catholic country in Asia. Like many countries, many of the inhabitants are only nominally Catholic but everyone was happy to throw a big party for a distinguished visitor. Along with this denomination, silver 100 piso and 200 piso and a gold 2500 piso coin were issued, all with the same design.

The lower specimen was lot 14417 in Heritage sale 397 (New York, January 2006), where it sold for $690. The catalog description[1] noted, "Republic gold 5000 Piso 1994, John Paul II Papal Visit, Proof 69 Ultra Cameo NGC."

Recorded mintage: unknown but not common. The SCWC recorded 1,000 minted for the silver 200 piso.

Specification: 16.81 g, .925 fine gold, .499 troy oz AGW.

Catalog reference: KM 267.
