This coin was minted in Lima, Peru, of a transitional type struck 1789-91. The bust is that of the deceased Charles III while the king's name is that of the reigning Charles IV. This specimen was lot 3497 in the Eliasberg sale, where it sold for $805. The catalog description[1] noted, "1791 IJ 1 escudo. Lima mint. EF-45 (NGC). Types as above. Deep yellow gold, some reverse deposits. From the John H. Clapp Collection; Clapp estate to Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr., 1942."

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 3.38 g, .875 fine gold, .095 troy oz AGW; this specimen: 3.33 grams, 19.70 mm diameter.
