Nicaragua 1956 50 centavos
This specimen is a later date of a type issued 1939, 1946, 1950-56, 1965 and 1972-74. Nicaragua, never prosperous, suffered severely in the earthquake of 1972 and the subsequent incompetent and corrupt response by the Somoza regime. In 1979, the Somozas were overthrown by the Sandinistas, an event which led to the notorious Iran-Contra affair.
Recorded mintage: 2,000,000 plus a few proofs.
