The first specimen was lot 31218 in Heritage sale 3049 (Long Beach, September 2016), where it sold for $1,057.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "Republic gold 2-1/2 Pesos 1876 Mo-B AU58 NGC, Mexico City mint. A rare date with a Standard Catalog of World Coins value in XF of $1,050. Although unlisted as such, quite possibly as overassayer type, with very faint remnants of what is likely an M existing beneath the B assayer initial on the reverse." The second specimen was lot 71303 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Santa Ana, CA, May 2018), where it did not sell. The catalog description[2] noted, "MEXICO. 2-1/2 Pesos, 1876-MoB. NGC MS-62. Unknown mintage. Sharply struck and brilliant with reflective surfaces and quite good eye appeal." The type is also recorded from Culiacan, Durango, Guanajuato, Alamos, Hermosillo and Zacatecas but Mexico City is by far the most prolific issuer. The SCWC does not award this date a premium. The series, never popular, ended in 1893.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 4.23 g, .875 fine gold, .119 troy oz AGW.

Catalog reference: Fr-148; KM-411.5.
