Morton & Eden sale 104, lot 366

This specimen was lot 366 in Morton & Eden sale 104 (London, November 2019), where it sold for £800 (about US$1,239 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "Republic, 4 reales, Mexico City mint, 1856 GF/GC, F of assayer's mark over C, weakly struck at centre, virtually mint state." Ten mints (Mexico City, Guanajuato, Zacatecas, Potosi, Oaxaca, Hermosillo, Real del Catorce, Guadalupe y Calvo, Guadalajara and Culiacan) struck this type of which Guanajuato is tied with Zacatecas as the commonest mint. This date is listed along with a rare 1856-Mo GF (no overassayer).

Recorded mintage: unknown but very scarce.

Specification: 13.54 g, .903 fine silver, .392 troy oz ASW.
