from the Stack's Bowers 2017 NYINC sale, lot 6968
Mexico SB117-6968r.jpg

This specimen was lot 6968 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2017), where it sold for $258.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. 8 Reales, 1839-GoPJ. PCGS MS-63 Secure Holder. Attractive organic tone with amber hues and a dark crescent at the edge of obverse." The Guanajuato mint operated 1812-1900 and struck this type 1825-97. During the 1830's and 1840's, Guanajuato and Zacatecas were the most prolific mints; Guanajuato issues are slightly more popular as they are readily available in nice condition. Zacatecas issues of this period were often wretchedly made. Assayer PJ is recorded for 1834-42 and an overassayer, PJ/JJ, is noted for the year.

Recorded mintage: unknown but common.

Specification: 27.07 g, .903 fine silver, .786 troy oz ASW.

Catalog reference: KM-377.8; DP-Go21.
