Ponterio sale 155, lot 6296

The first specimen was struck at the Guadalajara mint in 1839. This mint was opened by the royalists in 1812 and operated until 1895 and struck all denominations. While Guadalajara issues of 1875-95 are common, the early issues, especially those of 1825-39, are scarce to rare. Assayer JG is recorded for 1836-39.

The second specimen was lot 6296 in Ponterio sale 155 (Baltimore, November 2010), where it sold for $1,495. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. Guadalajara. 8 Reales, 1839-JG. Another gorgeous coin. Beautifully toned. PCGS MS-64."

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 27.07 g, .903 fine silver, .786 troy oz ASW.

Catalog reference: KM 377.6, DP-Ga18.
