from Goldberg sale 93, lot 2216
Mexico G93-2216r.jpg

This portrait four reales of Charles III is one of a type struck 1772-89 in Mexico City. Assayer FM is recorded for the years 1770-78. The issues of 1772-73 with inverted mintmark have catalog number KM 97.1; catalog number KM 97.2a covers the issues of 1785-89 with fineness lowered to .896. This specimen was lot 2216 in Goldberg sale 93 (Los Angeles, September 2016), where it sold for $851.87. The catalog description[1] noted, "Mexico. 4 Reales, 1776-Mo FM NGC VF30. Charles III. Several surface marks. Toned. NGC graded VF-30." The magic date of 1776 earned this specimen a substantial boost in price; it is no scarcer than other dates of the type.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 13.54 g, .903 fine silver, .393 troy oz ASW.

Catalog reference: KM 97.2.
