Heritage sale 3015, lot 25283

This specimen was lot 25283 in Heritage sale 3015 (Long Beach, September 2011), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "Felipe V gold 8 Escudos 1744-MF, AU55 NGC, a superb example of this early type featuring the King in full peruke. The surfaces are lightly toned with flashes of luster in the legends and the details are exceptionally sharp. Rare and highly desirable in this select grade." This eight escudos was one of a series struck in Mexico 1732-47 during the reign of Philip V (1700-1746). It superseded the gold cobs previously minted.

Specification: 27.07 grams, .917 fine gold, .798 troy oz AGW.
