This eight escudos was one of a series struck 1732-47 during the reign of Philip V (1700-1746). It superseded the gold cobs previously minted. This specimen was lot 4116 in Goldberg sale 74 (Los Angeles, June 2013), where it sold for $4,830 including buyer's fees. The catalog description[1] noted, "Mexico. 8 Escudos, 1742-Mo MF. Philip V. Large armored bust to right. Reverse: Crowned Hapsburg arms within chain of the Order of the Golden Fleece. Mintmark repeated at lower left and right, separated by fleece. Assayers' initials to left of shield, value to right. ANACS graded AU-55."
