Kempten 1748-MW thaler Dav-2372

This specimen was lot 3675 in Stacks-Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2015), where it sold for $1,057.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Kempten. Taler, 1748-MW. Engelbert von Sirgenstein. NGC Unc Details--Mount Removed. Mount mark at 12 o'clock. Dull gray toning with sharp features. From the Rockaway Collection." This is one of two thalers issued by the abbots in the eighteenth century, the other (Dav-2371) being very rare. Kempten was annexed to Bavaria in 1803.
