Guatemala 1773G 8 reales rev DSLR.jpg

The first specimen was lot 4893 in Goldberg sale 69 (Los Angeles, May, 2012), where it did not sell. The catalog description [2] noted, "Guatemala. 8 Reales, 1773-G P. Charles III. Bust right. Reverse: Crowned arms. Lint mark in obverse field. Very scarce. NGC graded About Uncirculated, Details (Obverse Graffiti)." The second specimen was lot 1456 in Sedwick sale 12 (Winter Park, FL, October 2012), where it sold for $1,003. The catalog description[1] noted, "Guatemala, bust 8 reales Charles III, 1773P, rare. AXF with crude obverse surface (uneven and scratched), lightly toned reverse with faint adjustment marks, nice rims, rare 2-year type. Pedigreed to Robert Nesmith (8/20/1947)." Shown is a 1773 eight reales from the Guatemala mint, of a type issued 1772-73. For Guatemala, the bust dollars of Charles III are considerably rarer than the pillar dollars and the first two years, with mintmark "G," are scarcer than the later dates with mintmark "NG." Guatemala issues are notably cruder than other mints.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 27.07 g, .917 fine silver, .798 troy oz ASW, the second specimen is 26.6 grams.

Catalog reference: Eliz-26; KM-36.1; CT-823.
