This type was struck 1838-60 and is the first type for Queen Victoria (r. 1837-1901). It is not rare but a challenge to find in nice condition, especially as the pure copper composition wore rapidly in circulation. This specimen was lot 1042 in Stack's Bowers ANA auction (Chicago, August 2014), where it sold for $881.25. The catalog description<sup>[1]</sup> noted, "GREAT BRITAIN. Farthing, 1849. NGC MS-65 RB. An excellent example of this scarce date. Sharply struck."
