from the Stack's Bowers 2017 NYINC sale, part of lot 6544
Great Britain SB117-6544d.jpg

This specimen was part of lot 6544 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2017), which sold for $423. The catalog description[1] noted, "GREAT BRITAIN. Maundy Set, 1713. Anne (1702-14). NGC AU-55 to 58. All certified by NGC, the Two Pence is graded AU-58 while the other three are AU-55. Lovely stoney grey toning with a touch of golden amber iridescence. From the Q. David Bowers Collection." The 1713 Maundy set comprised the penny, tuppence, threepence and groat. In Anne's reign, these were ordinary circulating coins which the (presumably) grateful recipients were expected to spend on life's necessities. Only in later reigns did these become specially struck collector's items. This type was struck 1703-13.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 1.00 g, .925 fine silver.

Catalog reference: KM 513, S-3599; KM-MDS40 (Maundy set); ESC-2014.
