Heritage sale 3024, lot 23885
France 1865A 50 francs rev Heritage 3024-23885.jpg

This specimen was lot 23885 in Heritage sale 3024 (Chicago, April 2013), where it sold for $1,410. The catalog description[1] noted, "Napoleon III gold 50 Francs 1865-A, MS62 NGC, fully lustrous with soft original toning, scarcer date with a mintage of 3,740." This type was struck 1862-68 at Paris and Strasbourg, superseding the previous "bare head" fifty francs of Napoleon III of France. Most specimens trade for a little more than their bullion value. This is a common date, despite the low reported mintage.

Recorded mintage: 3,740.

Specification: 16.13 g, .900 fine gold, lettered edge.

Catalog reference: Gad-1112. Schl. 336. Fr-582; F.548/5, KM 804.1.
