Jean Elsen sale 124, lot 1139
from the Mountain Groan Collection
France 1841W 2 francs rev DSLR.JPG
This specimen was lot 1139 in Jean Elsen sale 124 (Brussels, March 2015), where it sold for €120 (about US$150 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"FRANCE, Louis-Philippe (1830-1848), AR 2 francs, 1841 W, Lille. Très Beau. (France, Louis-Philippe (1830-48), silver two francs of 1841, Lille mint, very fine.)"
Many issues of this type are known from a handful (<10) of examples. The type is not difficult to find but is expensive in high grade. This date is priced about twice the common date (1847-A). All two francs issued prior to 1859, including this one, were demonetized in 1869 to make way for the succeeding issue which was only .835 fine.

Specification: 27 mm diameter, 10 grams, .900 fine silver, reeded edge. Designed by Joseph François Domard, 1792-1858.

Recorded mintage: 290,020[1].

Catalog reference: Gad-520, F.260/91, KM 743.13.
