from the Mountain Groan Collection
France 1790W liard rev DSLR.jpg

This specimen is a copper liard à l'écu struck at the Orléans mint for France in 1790, the year after the Bastille fell. It is scarce, being priced by Droulers[1] at triple the common date (1783-W). Its face value was three deniers or one fourth of a sol. The first specimen was lot 294 in Classical Numismatic Group's sale of the Lissner Collection (Chicago, August 2014), where it sold for $363. The catalog description[2] noted, "FRANCE, Royal. Louis XVI. 1774–1793. CU Liard. Lille mint; différents: star/demi-lis. A.F.J. Gamot, engraver. L.T.F. Lepage, director. Dated 1790 W. In NGC encapsulation graded MS 63 RB."

Recorded mintage: unknown but fairly common.

Specification: 3.06 g, copper, 23.5 mm diameter, plain edge, designed by Benjamin Duvivier, the first specimen 21 mm diameter, 2.9 g, 6h axis.

Catalog reference: Dr/4 no. 894, Dr/2 no. 627, Duplessy 1716; Ciani 2197; KM 585.14.
