from the Stacks Bowers 2018 ANA sale, lot 20392
France SB818-20392r.jpg

This specimen was lot 20392 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Philadelphia, August 2018), where it did not sell. The catalog description[2] noted, "FRANCE. Ecu, 1652 T. Nantes Mint. Louis XIV (1643-1715). PCGS MS-63+ Secure Holder. Well struck, nearly mark free and entirely luminous without evidence of the die adjustment lines that are often seen, at least in part, over the surfaces. The finest we've seen (and also the finest graded) from this date and mint." The type was issued in large numbers 1646-54. Despite the low mintage, Droulers[1] prices this date about 25% more than the common 1652-A.

Recorded mintage: est. 76,096[1].

Specification: 27.45 g, .917 fine silver, 39-41 mm diameter, plain edge, designed by Jean Warin.

Catalog reference: Gad-202; Dr/5 no. 391, Dr/4 no. 441, Dr/2 no. 298, KM 155.16, Dav-3799.
