Jean Elsen sale 138, lot 1034
This specimen was lot 1034 in Jean Elsen sale 138 (Brussels, September 2018), where it sold for €2,600 (about US$3,608 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"FRANCE, Royaume, Louis XIV (1643-1715), AV demi-louis d'or à la mèche longue, 1652A, Paris. D/ T. enfantine laurée à d. R/ Croix formée de huit L couronnés, cantonnée de quatre lis. Très rare Légèrement paillé. presque Superbe. (kingdom of France, Louis XIV, 1643-1715, gold half louis of the long lock of 1652, Paris mint. Obverse: laureate infant head to right; reverse: cross formed of eight crowned "L's", cantoned with four fleur-de-lys. Very rare, lightly polished, about extremely fine.)"
This demi-louis d'or à la mèche longue was struck 1646-55, 1659, 1661. The 1652-A is a common date for the type but the type is rare, much rarer than the 1652-A louis d'or à la mèche longue.

Recorded mintage: 64,515, most common date but still rare.

Specification: 3.38 g, .917 fine gold, 20 mm diameter, plain edge, designed by Jean Warin; this specimen 3,36 g.

Catalog reference: Dr/4 no. 383, Dr/2 no. 218, Dupl. 1423; Gad-235.
