Heritage sale 3032, lot 24644
France 1651D louis dor rev H3032-24644.jpg

This specimen was lot 24644 in Heritage sale 3032 (Chicago, April 2014), where it sold for $1,762.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "Louis XIV gold Louis d'or à la méche courte 1651-D, Lyon mint, AU58 NGC. Childlike portrait with short curl, (a la meche courte) reaching to neck. Virtually no wear and with strong eye appeal." Note the bold overdate. This louis d'or à la mèche courte, struck at the Lyon mint 1646-59, is among the more available louis of Louis XIV of France. The Lyon mint retained the mèche courte ("short hair") style until 1656, long after the other mints had adopted the mèche longue. It is still an expensive coin.

Recorded mintage: 16,943.

Specification: 6.75 g, .917 fine gold, plain edge, designed by Jean Warin.

Catalog reference: Fr-415, KM 149.2, Dr/4 no. 344, Dr/2 no. 213.
