S1953; Fr-132. 7.61 grams. Edward IV, 1461-1485. Bristol B in waves (denoting Bristol mint) mint mark sun, large fleurs in spandrils. Obverse king in ship with sword and ornamental shield. Practically as struck, and very rare in any grade. NGC graded AU-55. Royal branch mints were established in Bristol, Coventry, Norwich and York, to help with the demand for coin production. Gold Ryals from the branch mints are much rarer than those produced at the London mint, and consequently of much greater value. The Bristol mint only remained open for a few years - until 1472. Edward IV set about making England profitable through foreign trade, including his own commercial ventures., to the extent that he was eventually able to make the crown solvent, rather than buried in debt as under previous kings. He did his best to make the Crown and government administratively efficient, and financially sound, but he would always spend money on his court, which was as resplendent as those in France or Burgundy."
