Heritage sale 3042, lot 29567
Colombia H3042-29567r.jpg

This type was struck at Medellin and Bogotá 1919-24. It and the accompanying 2½ and ten pesos replaced the "minero" type issued 1913-19. The Medellin issues are mintmarked "A". This specimen was lot 29567 in Heritage sale 3042 (Long Beach, September 2015), where it sold for $1,762.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "Republic gold 5 Pesos 1921-A MS62 NGC, Antioquia mint. Fully brilliant with a strong strike. A very rare date, reportedly struck in quantities less than 100, with 13 coins having apparently been found and released from the Banco de Venezuela in the 1990s and another dozen or so likely extant. This example, better than most, is easily among the finest seen. The first example of the issue we have offered."

Recorded mintage: unknown but few.

Specification: 7.99 g, .917 fine gold, .235 troy oz AGW (same standard as the British sovereign).

Catalog reference: Sedwick-53. Restrepo-454. KM-201.1.
