This coin was lot 8511 in Ponterio sale 150 (Los Angeles, August 2009), where it sold for $2012.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "COLOMBIA. 8 Escudos, 1801-JJ. Small scratch in king's hair. UNCIRCULATED." The type was struck in Nuevo Reino (Bogotá) in Nueva Granada (now Colombia) 1791-1808. An overdate, 1801/0, is noted for the year. Nuevo Reino and its neighbor Popayán were the most prolific issuers of gold coins during the colonial period and this coin is common. Assayer JJ is recorded for 1774-1808.
