This specimen was lot 20715 in Heritage sale 3010 (Boston, August 2010), where it sold for $1,475. The catalog description[1] noted, "Carlos IIII gold 8 Escudos 1798-JJ Nuevo Reino, AU55 NGC, crisply struck with nice original toning and no flan flaws. From the Don Benito Collection of Hispanic Gold." The type was struck in Nuevo Reino in Nueva Granada (now Colombia) 1791-1808. Overdates abound. Nuevo Reino (Bogotá) and its neighbor Popayán were the most prolific issuers of gold coins during the colonial period and this coin is common.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 27.07 g, .875 fine gold, .761 troy oz AGW.

Catalog reference: KM 62.1.
