Aureo sale 246, lot 780

This specimen was lot 780 in Aureo y Calicó sale 246 (Barcelona, September 2012), where it sold for 160 € (about $243 including buyer's fees).

The catalog[1] noted,
"Carlos IV (1788-1808). 1797. Popayán. JF. 1 escudo. Leves hojitas. Parte de brillo original. Escasa. MBC/MBC+. (One escudo of 1797, Popayán mint. Light marks, some original luster, scarce, very fine to choice very fine.)"
This type was struck at Nuevo Reino (Bogotá) and Popayán 1791-1808 and is a common gold coin of Charles IV. Assayer JF is recorded for 1792-1808.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 3.38 g, .875 fine gold, .095 troy oz AGW.
