This specimen was lot 20711 in Heritage sale 3010 (Boston, August 2010), where it sold for $5,462.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "Carlos IIII gold 8 Escudos 1796JJ Nuevo Reino, MS63 NGC, a superb and fully original example with toned luster and extremely sharp design details. Rarely seen this nice." The type was struck in Nuevo Reino in Nueva Granada (now Colombia) 1791-1808. Overdates abound, including a 1796/5. Nuevo Reino (Bogotá) and its neighbor Popayán were the most prolific issuers of gold coins during the colonial period and this coin is common.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 27.07 g, .875 fine gold, .761 troy oz AGW.

Catalog reference: KM 62.1.
